Save Big Cats From Abuse (US ONLY)

Tiger in shed

The Big Cat Public Safety Act will puts an end to back yard breeding and exploitation of big cats and their cubs in America!  Please ask your members of congress to champion this bill so that it becomes law this session.

Big Cat Rescue and our coalition partners have been working since 2011 on this bill to end the private possession of big cats.  Our bill allows that people who possess these wild animals may keep them until they die of old age, but they cannot buy or breed more. None of the exotic cats in private possession serve any conservation purpose. In fact, the legal trade in these animals in the U.S. provides a smokescreen for illegal poaching and trade, so we have to stop it if we are going to save wild cats in the wild, where they belong.

In the 112th session of congress we had 60 legislators sign on and in the 113th session we built momentum and got to 119 cosponsors.  We ended the 114th session with 101 cosponsors and will soon be introducing this bill for current 2017-2018 session. We will need your help to rebuild that great momentum.

There are many issues before congress so the challenge is bringing this bill on the legislator’s radar by showing them their constituents care. Please let your Senators and Representative know that you want them to sign on as a cosponsor when the bill is introduced. To have the MOST impact follow these steps:

Step 1: Enter your zip code (9 digit best) below. It will take you to a page that is set up to easily email your Senators and Representative.  The page shows you your Senators and Representative at the right along with their phone number.

Step 2: Making a quick call to your legislators and asking them to support the Big Cat Public Safety Act. Phone calls have the greatest impact! You can call at night or on the weekend if you prefer to just leave a message. All you need to say is something like:

Say the following or something similar: “I live in the district in zip code ______ and I want to urge your boss to cosponsor the Big Cat Public Safety Act. The bill number is HR 3546. Thank you.”

Letting us know you made the call by visiting This helps us point out to legislators that many people care enough to take the time to call.

Step 3: Fill in your contact information beneath the pre-written email message below. NOTE: Message with the same subject line and text are less effective because they are discounted as "form" letters despite how unfair that is. Your message will be much more effective if you change the subject line (but leave in the bill numbers) and substitute your own simple message - one or two sentences is fine.  Then hit the submit button.

EVERY CALL AND EVERY EMAIL HELPS! If enough constituents, i.e. VOTERS, call and email, legislators will take notice.  Legislators have thousands of bills coming at them. The best way this bill will get their attention is for them to know that MANY of their constituents care. The only way they know you care is through your calls and emails.

The tiger pictured here spent much of his life in a small concrete garage. He cannot speak. PLEASE BE HIS VOICE! THANK YOU!
